BIOGRAPHY
Philippe Kaenel
Philippe Kaenel is a professor of contemporary art history at the University of Lausanne. His research and teaching focus on the graphic arts in general–illustrations, caricatures, cartoons, posters, photography–as well as on theory, contemporary art and religious art.
He has published Le Métier d’illustrateur 1830-1900 : Rodolphe Töpffer, J.-J. Grandville, Gustave Doré (Droz, 2005) and other books on art criticism, caricature and political imagery. He has curated numerous exhibitions and contributed to their catalogues. In addition ti the monographs Eugène Burnand, peintre naturaliste (5 Continents éditions, 2004 ; 2006) and Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen : L’œil de la rue (5 Continents éditions, 2008), recent curatorial and editorial projects include Gustave Doré : l’imaginaire au pouvoir (Paris, Flammarion, 2014).
