Appointment of Jean de Loisy as its new Artistic Director
The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles is delighted to announce the appointment of Jean de Loisy as its Artistic Director from April 2025. Jean de Loisy succeeds Bice Curiger, who has expertly steered the institution since its foundation in 2014.
A well-respected art critic and curator specialising in modern and contemporary art, Jean de Loisy is a leading figure in the current world of art. Formerly President of the Palais de Tokyo, he has also held high-profile positions at the Pompidou Centre and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. He was Director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He already knows the Fondation and its challenges from the inside, having served as Secretary to its Administrative Board since 2018, as well as acting as a co-curator with Bice Curiger of the “Van Gogh and the Stars” exhibition, organised in 2024 around the generous loan of Starry Night by the Musée d’Orsay.

Maja Hoffmann, Chair of the Fondation’s Administrative Board, stated:
“I’m delighted to have convinced Jean de Loisy to take the reins of the position of Artistic Director to help us organise the transition into a new chapter for the Fondation.
His innovate approach and exceptional expertise in the field of art will play a major role in shaping a new dynamic in our
institution. Through the curation of major exhibitions and the organisation of shared residencies with LUMA Arles and other
prominent partners, he will continue our mission to honour the universal legacy of Vincent van Gogh.”
She added: “I would also like to express my deep gratitude to Bice Curiger for her unstinting commitment for more than
ten years. Thanks to her unique vision and immense talent, she has succeeded in forging fruitful links between the timeless
work of Van Gogh and contemporary art. Her work has had a lasting impact on the history of the Fondation.”
Jean de Loisy shares her enthusiasm:
“I am honoured to be taking on this position at the Fondation Vincent van Gogh in
Arles. This institution embodies a unique dialogue between the artists of our era and that of Van Gogh and I am very much
looking forward to furthering this interaction and exploring the many facets it has to offer.”
Bice Curiger’s final exhibition as artistic director and curator, devoted to Sigmar Polke, will close on 26 October 2025.
Bice Curiger will then join the Fondation’s Administrative Board.
Jean de Loisy will be presenting his first programme in December. Further details of future programming will be available
at this moment.
Margaux Bonopera will continue in her role as assistant curator.
