This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition “Calm and Exaltation. Van Gogh in the Bührle Collection”, to be held at the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles from 4 March to 17 September 2017.
This catalogue discusses the paintings by Vincent van Gogh from the Foundation E. G. Bührle Collection from a contemporary standpoint. Two young academics, both of them Van Gogh specialists, offer an in-depth analysis of the works Blossoming Chestnut Branches (1890), Bridges Across the Seine at Asnières (1887) and Self-Portrait (1887) from a perspective that is not confined to strictly formal aspects, but which also takes into consideration the materiality of these canvases and the psychological dimension of the painter. This catalogue sheds an innovative light on the artist’s very personal vision of realism and on Vincent’s desire to portray the world en fleur.
